Guna Cave kodaikanal.jpg

Guna Cave

Open Time : 08:00 AM
Close Time : 04:30 PM
Operational Days - Open all 7 days
Approx. Duration Suggested - 1 Hour

Located far from the main city of Kodaikanal on the Pillar Rocks Road, Guna Caves is one among the mysterious tourist attractions in Kodaikanal that promises an enthralling experience. Originally referred to as Devil’s Kitchen, these caves are caverns formed between the three boulders of the mountain.

The Guna Caves are formed at an altitude of 2230 metres above sea level. Though the caves were discovered in 1821 itself, they gained huge tourist attraction only after the Tamil movie “Guna” shot here which became a huge hit. Today, parts of the caves can be seen from a distance. Bats are found in plenty inside the Guna Caves which make the place look scary. The path through the pine forests from the most entrance of the Guna Caves to the particular caves looks out-of-the-world. The huge roots of the pine trees are found everywhere outside the soil and promise an honest scope for photography at this tourist spot.

There exists a hairline difference between thrill and danger here which is why it's best to go to the Guna caves with a wise gang of friends or under the supervision of a guide. There are warning signs during the trail leading through from the most entrance to the hilltop. The narrow ravines inside the caves are now closed to the general public . The damp soil, crisp mountain air, weather , and therefore the perplexing caves ahead make one’s trip to the present place definitely unforgettable. The Guna Caves are surrounded by many other tourist spots like pine Forest, Suicide Point, and Dolphin Nose Viewpoint which will be clubbed together to form your trip even more exciting.

The viewpoint of Pillar Rock is situated on the Moir Point road and it is managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The pillars are famous for providing bird's view of nearby surroundings areas. The chambers between these two massive rocks are called the Devil's Kitchen. Very few times you might find rocks covered with mist and clouds, but when the ways become clear, nothing beautiful than this could be ever seen. During winter and monsoons, the rocks are surrounded by thick clouds and tourists keep waiting for long time for the clouds to be cleared to get a glimpse of the clear rock view. And the waiting is worth with magnificent view of the rocks surrounded by clouds.

The top of the Rocks used to have access through a short, steep trek around the hillside (the walk to the rocks is currently prohibited due to suicide cases).

Coakers Walk

It is a narrow pedestrian path, constructed by Lt. Coaker in 1872, a one kilometer mountain road which runs along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai road which is 1/2km away from Kodai. The walk winding around mt. Nebo starts near van Allen hospital and joins the main road above St. Peter's Church provides a wide-angle spectacular view of the plains. On a cloudless, clear day one can have interesting sights, such as.... Dolphin's nose in south, valley of the pambar river in South East, birds eye view of Periyakulam and even city of Madurai.

The valley views along paved Coaker's Walk (admission Rs 2, Camera Rs. 5, Time: 7 am to 7pm) are superb when the mist clears. There's an observatory (admission Rs. 3) with telescope about halfway along. You can start from either end, near Greenlands Youth Hostel or Villa Retreat, and the stroll takes all of five minutes.

The views from Pillar Rocks, a 7km hike (one way beginning near Bryant Park), are also excellent. Greenlands Youth Hostel and Villa Retreat can organise guided walks, and guides can also be arranged through the tourist office (Rs. 50 to 70 per hour).
